Being the largest organ of the body, the skin is vulnerable in nature. It is easily exposed to all kinds of unfavorable conditions that cause irritation, rashes etc. Eczema is one of such skin conditions characterized by reddish, irritated and itchy skin. The term eczema is commonly used to describe various kinds of inflammation on the skin.

What causes eczema?

The exact cause of eczema is not clear but, the following are some of the conditions which have been found to trigger or aggravate it:

(i) Change of environment: In this case, the immune system reacts to a sudden change in environment causing inflammation of the skin.

(ii) Non-stop scratching in case of children: The constantly scratched part of the skin usually turns into wounds and this will eventually bring about eczema.

(iii) Contact with chemical products: Eczema can also occur due to contact with chemical products such as pesticides, perfumes.

(iv) Transfer from mother to child: Eczema can also be transferred from mother to child in case of nursing mothers. When the mother eats foods that the baby or child is allergic to, the latter is likely to come in contact with eczema.

How do we treat eczema?

No cure has been found for eczema yet, but it can be treated or managed in such a way that

inflammation, constant itching and worsening of the situation can be prevented or checked.

The following are some of the ways that eczema can be treated.

(i) Nursing mothers should go for allergy testing for their babies in order to be able to know which foods they (the babies) are allergic to. The main purpose is to avoid such foods so that the child can be free from eczema.

(ii) Apply natural lotions and stay moisturized always.

(iii) Ensure your environment and clothes are clean and kept in good condition.

(iv) Avoid too much contact with perfumes, pesticides and other chemical irritants.

(v) Ensure personal hygiene at all times.
